Mobile Security Tips
Security is essential when accessing confidential information, making purchases and more via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet. Malware, phishing scams and fraud targeting mobile users continues to increase and is a very real threat. There are several simple security measures that you can take in order to minimize your chances of becoming a victim.

  • Lock your mobile device. Select a strong PIN/Password.
  • Install applications (apps) from trusted sources only. The Islanders Bank Mobile Banking applications are only available via the Google Play and iPhone App Stores.
  • Don’t “jailbreak” your device. Jail-breaking can cause your device to be more susceptible to malware as many of the security controls that are built-in to a mobile device become disabled.
  • Install updates to your device and applications on a regular basis. Updates often include enhanced security features and/or address security vulnerabilities- it’s important to always use the most current version of an application or mobile operating system.
  • Use a mobile security software solution. Contact your device manufacturer or mobile service provider for recommendations.
  • Block web ads or don’t click on them. Advertisements are an easy and common means for delivery of malware which can compromise your device.
  • Don’t click on suspicious links or attachments in email, text messages or via Social Media.  Delete suspicious email or text messages.
  • Phone numbers can be “spoofed.”   If you weren’t expecting a text message from the sender or the contents of the text message seem unusual, delete it.
  • Disable unwanted services on your mobile devices. Bluetooth & NFC can provide easy access to your mobile device for an unauthorized person.  Consult your device’s user manual or manufacturer to turn off these features.
  • Minimize use of public Wi-Fi. When using your mobile device on a public wireless network, limit or don’t access financial or confidential information.
